The Five Senses of Wellness — rediscovering the art of Shifā through the great dārüşşifas of the Ottoman world.
It is the nourishment of the body, mind, heart, soul, relationships, and environment together. The great dārüşşifas (healing institutions) of Islamic civilization were built upon this understanding. Within their walls, patients encountered beauty, sacred sound, compassionate care, nutritious food, flowing water, fragrant gardens, spiritual companionship, and medical expertise. Healing was not reduced to symptoms. It was understood as a journey toward wholeness.
Join Shaykha Dr. Rania Awaad and the Maristan team for an immersive five-day educational and spiritual experience through Istanbul and Edirne, exploring some of the most significant surviving dārüşşifas of the Ottoman world.
More than a historical tour, this journey invites participants to experience wellness through the Five Senses—Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, and Touch—while reflecting on how Islamic civilization cultivated human flourishing through beauty, knowledge, worship, service, and community. Through lectures, site visits, contemplative exercises, sensory workshops, shared meals, dhikr gatherings, and meaningful conversations, participants will explore what the historical maristan model can teach us about well-being today.

Each day is intentionally designed around one or more sensory pathways historically utilized within Islamic healing traditions — beauty, sound, fragrance, nourishment, and touch.
